Kirby Smart brought his championship mentality from the Alabama Crimson Tide to his old mater, the Georgia Bulldogs. This offseason, he plans to bring home another Georgia alum who previously coached at Alabama. According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Garrett Cox is set to join the Bulldogs’ defensive coaching staff. Cox formerly worked largely with linebackers for the TCU Horned Frogs. Cox has also coached in Alabama, Michigan, and Tennessee. Cox worked as an analyst at Alabama from 2015 until 2018.
Smart served as the Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator until the 2015 season before becoming the head coach at his alma university, Georgia. Cox also attended Georgia and received a bachelor’s degree in education. In 2006, he served as a student assistant on the Bulldogs’ football defensive staff under former head coach Mark Richt.
Cox also worked in the state as a video coordinator at Georgia Southern in 2007 and an assistant linebackers coach at Buford High School in Georgia in 2008. He will work directly with Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, who, like Smart, joined the Bulldogs from Alabama’s coaching staff.
Schumann has been at least a co-defensive coordinator for Georgia for the previous six years. During that time, Schumann also worked with inside linebackers.
