The Green Bay Packers anticipate being at the focus of a few more major changes during the 2025 offseason. Cornerback Jaire Alexander is expected to be dealt, Green Bay has been linked to a number of top free agents, and the 2025 NFL Draft is just around the corner.
With so many changing elements in the coming months, one name appears to be staying put.
“Welcome Addition” Packers GM Shuts Down Trade Talks Over Offensive Weapon
According to Wes Hodkiewicz from Packers.com:
When Love suffered a groin injury against Jacksonville in Week 8, Willis came off the bench and completed four passes for 56 yards and a touchdown, securing a 30-27 win.
“He was a welcome addition,” Gutekunst stated during last week’s NFL Scouting Combine. “I don’t think when you bring a player in right at the cutdown day, you expect him to start in a couple of weeks and do what he did.” I was highly impressed with his professionalism and preparation.”
Wills, acquired for a late seventh-round pick, joined Brad Johnson (1999 with Washington), Jeff George (1994 with Atlanta), Jim Plunkett (1980 with the Oakland Raiders), and John Hadl (1973 with the Los Angeles Rams) as the only quarterbacks to have a 120-plus passer rating in both of their first two starts since the merger.
With Willis entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, his outstanding play has sparked speculation about whether the Packers will consider trading the 6-foot-1, 225-pound quarterback or keeping him in the fold for next season.
Gutekunst emphasized in Indianapolis that he does not “talk about that stuff,” but praised Willis, Head Coach Matt LaFleur, and his staff for rapidly bringing the 25-year-old quarterback up to speed.
Green Bay appears to be interested in keeping Willis for the last year of his rookie deal. It makes a lot of sense to keep a young, affordable, but successful quarterback on your roster.
