The Tennessee Volunteers are approaching their fifth year under head coach Josh Heupel, and according to NFL insiders, the program’s future looks strong.
For over two decades, the Tennessee Volunteers averaged 7.5 victories per season before Josh Heupel took over as head coach in 2021. Since then, they’ve rocketed from a middling SEC club to a perennial playoff contender under their new coach.
Fresh off their first trip to the College Football Playoff, despite a disappointing finish, they have one of the nation’s top returning quarterbacks in Nico Iamaleava, and under Heupel, it’s almost likely they’ll be able to run the ball. Simply put, there is a consistent level of greatness in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Vols football program.
Something that couldn’t be said for a long time. That standard of performance has been recognized not only in the wins and losses columns over the last four seasons, but also by NFL executives and head coaches. We spent a week in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, and the Vols have the industry buzzing.
During our trip in Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine, an NFL coach told Vols on SI, “That program (Tennessee) is smart for the first time in a long time.” They are not cutting corners. For years, their fan base has functioned as a cyclical firing squad, to their own cost. The new leadership and coaching regime is only beginning to take shape.
They are acquiring players and making moves, but the most important thing to note is that it is a crime against college football when Tennessee lacks talent and coaching, and they now have both on Rocky Top. That program required discipline, and Josh provided it.”
