Last offseason, the Detroit Lions had a clear need on defense. They desperately needed to add more talent at cornerback. As a result, the team made its most significant move of the offseason at that position. They acquired Carlton Davis from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a third-round draft pick.
A year later, he has the opportunity to test the free agent market, which appears to be exactly what he intends to do. With less than a week until the NFL’s permissible tampering period, Davis wrote, “I will not make the same mistake twice.” If you want your defense strengthened, you know who to pay. “Turn on the tape!”

Prior to this, there was some hope that the Lions might be able to keep Davis, possibly even before free agency began. This post suggests that it is unlikely to happen. The free agent class at cornerback isn’t the greatest, but Davis is one of the top names. He is sure to receive some significant offers whenever teams can begin talking to him. Davis is coming off a strong season despite his injury difficulties in 2024. During his one season with the Lions, he restricted opposing quarterbacks to a 55.3% completion rate.
The Lions still need cornerbacks, as the two they drafted last offseason have yet to show themselves. That will most certainly force them to hunt for a veteran at the position, but they will struggle to win a bidding war for Davis.
They’re working on extending Aidan Hutchinson’s contract and will most likely do the same with Kerby Joseph. That will eat into their financial power, and the team has other needs on the roster. Davis could do well in free agency, but the Lions will most likely still need a cornerback this offseason.
