JUST IN: Padres New Weapon Jose Iglesias Open Up On Mets Divorce and Why He Choose The Padres Over Dodgers

San Diego Padres star slugger Jose Iglesias revealed some intriguing details about a couple of key themes that have been hovering over his head in recent weeks.

Padres’ Jose Iglesias on his offseason break with the Mets (97.3). The Fan’s Sammy Levitt posted this Iglesias comment about leaving the New York Mets in free agency:

“It is startling, definitely. But I do not take it personally. It’s all business. “I respect it,” Iglesias stated.
The 35-year-old was a hero for the Mets as they advanced to the 2024 NLCS. Over 85 regular-season games, Iglesias batted.337 and scored 39 runs. In the postseason, the 12-year veteran has 10 hits in 12 games for New York.

Despite his exceptional performance, Iglesias was not retained by the Mets. The executive staff cited roster flexibility and young development as grounds for not assigning him one of their remaining roster spots.

The former 2015 All-Star also discussed perhaps playing in the minor leagues for San Diego. According to Levitt, Iglesias openly declared:

“I’m not a minor league player at this point in my career,” the seasoned vet explained.

Jose Iglesias' two-run single

Firmly stated and properly so. Iglesias is nearing the end of his MLB career. That, combined with the fact that he is so effective at the plate in terms of getting on base, speaks to the value he will likely provide to the Padres if he is used regularly.

San Diego’s lineup is strong, but given his age and expertise, the minors appear to be a step behind. He’ll aim to give the Padres’ power hitters a safe bet to go up in the batting order the next time out.
