The Denver Broncos have a new starting safety after allegedly agreeing to a three-year, $45 million agreement with former San Francisco 49ers fifth-round pick Talanoa Hufanga. According to Adam Schefter, his deal is worth up to $45 million, but owing to real injury concerns, he is only guaranteed $20 million.
This is a fairly beneficial deal for the Broncos in terms of guaranteed money, especially for a player who has only appeared in 17 games over the last two seasons. However, if he remains healthy, the “up to” amount begins to benefit Hufanga. As a fan, I’m delighted with both sides of the contract. If he stays healthy, I’d be happy to give a former first-team All-Pro player $15 million every year.
In any case, he should be a significant step forward from P.J. Locke. Hufanga, at 25 years old, is also entering his prime years. I like this signing assuming Hufanga can stay fit all season.
Given the injury issues, I’d be fine with the Broncos not quickly cutting and moving on from Locke. He’d be a solid backup with plenty of game experience, and despite his occasional troubles, he’s likely to be better than anyone Denver can turn to in 2025.
