When the San Antonio Spurs traded for De’Aaron Fox in early February, it was believed that the point guard would immediately become Victor Wembanyama’s running partner. While the two may potentially form a long-term alliance, Wembanyama’s season-ending shutdown halted any immediate success. Wembanyama may not be the only one missing substantial time; Fox has been nursing a pinky finger ailment, and he may be on the verge of finding a permanent remedy.
Fox has long been expected to need surgery this offseason, but he has done an excellent job of playing despite discomfort and suffering. However, with the Spurs in a downward spiral and the playoffs out of reach, Fox may rush into surgery this season so he can have a full summer to adjust to the Spurs system. “We’re shooting for whenever we’re in LA, because the doctor’s in LA, so that makes it easier,” Fox said of getting his troublesome finger examined. “The surgery may or may not happen that day.
The Spurs’ next game is against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 17, so if he undergoes surgery, his season may end before the middle of the month. Fox is averaging 19.3 points and 6.5 assists in 15 games with the Spurs, despite a modest drop in shooting efficiency, and shutting him down will almost surely put the Spurs in contention for a top choice in the 2025 NBA Draft.
