Although Cole, the Yankees organization, and the team’s supporters are devastated by the news, the 2023 Cy Young Award winner is in a good mood. Cole posted a motivational message on Instagram shortly after it was announced that he will require season-ending surgery. “I’m totally dedicated to the work that lies ahead, and I have a lot left to offer. I’ll focus on my rehabilitation every day and cheer for the 2025 Yankees at every turn.

Cole wrote. “I am excited to return to the mound, stronger than ever, because I love this game and I love competing.” Cole, 34, did not make his ’24 season debut until June after being shut down a year ago due to right elbow pain. He bounced back, though, and pitched to a 3.41 ERA in 95 innings throughout the regular season. In the postseason, he earned a 2.17 ERA in 29 innings and helped the Yankees win their first American League pennant since 2009. In December of 2019, Cole, a Yankees fan growing up, signed a nine-year, $324 million contract with New York.Eyewitness News on X: "Yankees Gerrit Cole 'disheartened' by pitching injury discourse https://t.co/GPxnkI3LR6 https://t.co/Cs9M9XVh3b" / X

Although he chose to opt out of his contract in November of 2024, he and the Yankees decided to keep it in its current form, meaning he still owes $144 million until 2028.

Cole has thrown to a 59-28 record, a 3.12 ERA, with 915 strikeouts in 759 innings during his five seasons with the Yankees.
