There are movements coming from the Green Bay Packers!
The Packers have finally addressed their cornerback need after agreeing to a $77 million contract with lineman Aaron Banks. Nate Hobbs, a former cornerback with the Las Vegas Raiders, is joining the Packers on a four-year, $48 million contract with a $16 million guarantee, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The Packers have quickly added talented cornerbacks to their secondary, which was in dire need of reinforcements. Jaire Alexander is virtually gone, but Corey Ballentine and Eric Stokes are free agents. With the addition of Nate Hobbs, the Packers made a significant move to strengthen the secondary. Grade: A
The nickel position is now the Packers’ top priority.
Hobbs can have an effect right away.
Hobbs, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound cornerback, has experience on the outside but mostly played in the slot for the Raiders. Given that Keisean Nixon flourished on the outside this past season, Green Bay might see him as a substitute in the slot.
The Packers’ secondary will greatly benefit from his expertise in both roles.
It’s a traditional move by Brian Gutekunst. Hobbs is just 26 years old and about to hit his prime. With 51 appearances and 38 starts for the Raiders, he has four years of NFL experience. He has made 19 pass defenses and three interceptions. Hobbs had the 11th-best Coverage EPA (-15.6) among all defensive backs targeted at least 40 times during the previous season, according to The 33rd Team.
He can contribute right away to the Packers’ struggling secondary, seldom gives up big plays, and is versatile both inside and outside.
Although the specifics of the contract are still unknown, the basic parameters of $12 million annually with a $16 million guarantee appear fair. The Packers made a wise business decision here, but many teams overpaid on the first day of free agency.
