Over the summer, the San Antonio Spurs filled an apparent need at point guard by signing one of the best to ever wear them. After 19 seasons of competing against him in the Western Conference, the Spurs signed Chris Paul to a one-year contract. Paul is clearly past his prime, but he remains a high-level floor general and facilitator who can get the most out of his younger colleagues.
Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama have profited much from playing alongside him, and the majority of the Spurs’ eventual success can be attributed to Paul’s guidance this season. On Wednesday, the Spurs faced the Dallas Mavericks, and the NBA made an announcement on Chris Paul.
With 20 seasons under his belt, Paul has seldom missed a game due to a long-standing injury, and on Wednesday, he passed Gary Payton for 17th all-time in terms of games played. The top two are Robert Parish (1,611) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,560), with Paul’s mark of 1,336 indicating he has a long way to go if he wants to break that record. LeBron James has 1,550 points and counting, and he is anticipated to pass Parish before calling his quits.
Paul is widely recognized as one of the greatest point guards of all time, ranking second only to John Stockton in terms of assists and steals.
The other Spurs in the top 20 in terms of most games played are Tim Duncan, who ranks 11th after 19 seasons, and Kevin Willis, who won a championship with the Spurs in 2004. Moses Malone finished his career with the Spurs, appearing in 17 games.
