Green Bay Packers fans have been calling for reinforcements at wide receiver since the team’s disappointing Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. By the end of that game, the receiving corps was severely depleted, and with Christian Watson expected to miss the start of the upcoming season, the need for a new addition has become even more pressing.
Although the Packers missed out on acquiring DK Metcalf or reuniting with Davante Adams—players they reportedly never seriously pursued—they still have a chance to land a high-caliber playmaker. According to Ari Meirov, Green Bay is among the teams actively exploring the possibility of signing former Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp, who was released earlier this week. Betting odds have shifted in response, with the Packers emerging as the fourth favorite to sign Kupp, dropping from 25/1 (+2500) to under 7/1 (+650).
Packers Need a True WR1
Even before Watson’s injury, Green Bay likely needed to bolster its receiving unit this offseason. Now, with one of their top three wideouts set to miss the start of the 2025 season, the urgency to add talent has increased significantly.
While Jordan Love has led an efficient passing attack over the past year and a half, critics and fans alike have pointed out that he lacks a true WR1—a go-to target for critical situations. The impact of a top receiver is evident across the league; Josh Allen’s development soared with the addition of Stefon Diggs, and Jayden Daniels has quickly leaned on Terry McLaurin as his primary target.
Love, however, has never had that elite, dependable option. During Aaron Rodgers’ late-MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021, he could count on Adams for crucial third downs. Now, Green Bay finds itself in a different dilemma. While they have promising receivers like Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks, none have fully developed into a complete WR1.
How Kupp Could Elevate the Packers’ Offense
Some purists who favor a draft-and-develop approach might question signing Kupp. However, for the vast majority of Packers fans, acquiring the former Super Bowl MVP would be a major win.
Kupp has already proven he can be a top target on a championship-winning team. Despite his recent injury struggles, he has shown he still has plenty to offer. Had the Rams not discovered breakout star Puka Nacua in the 2023 draft, Kupp might not even be available.
Injuries have cost Kupp at least five games per season over the past three years, yet he remained on track for 1,000-yard campaigns each time. His health is a concern, but if Green Bay can get him for most of the season and, more importantly, the playoffs, the signing could be a game-changer.
