The New Orleans Saints made a late push to sign Cooper Kupp during free agency. After the experienced wideout signed with the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, New Orleans decided to take a chance on a lesser-known receiver with potential.
The Saints have agreed to terms with Velus Jones Jr., according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on X. Jones was picked in the third round by the Chicago Bears and last played for the Carolina Panthers.
Despite being picked as the 71st overall choice in the 2022 draft, Jones received little playing time in Chicago.
He played in 26 games over his first two seasons and started twice. Jones caught 11 catches for 127 yards and one touchdown during that time, in addition to 154 rushing yards and another score. He also returned 38 kick-offs. But the return game would eventually prove his undoing.
The Saints take a chance on Velus Jones Jr., a wide receiver and kicker.
Jones muffed a kickoff during Chicago’s 2024 season opener against the Tennessee Titans, resulting in a turnover. The ball passed through his hands and struck his chest before going to the ground. Jones then accidentally booted the ball 20 yards upfield, where the Titans pounced. He didn’t play another game for the Bears.
Chicago benched Jones for the next five games before releasing him following Week 6. He joined the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad but did not appear in a single game. He was then added to the Carolina Panthers’ active roster in Week 15. In two games with the Panthers, he carried once and returned one kick. Now he has another opportunity with New Orleans.
In 2024, the Saints’ wide receivers suffered injuries. Chris Olave was placed on injured reserve with a concussion and limited to eight games, while Rashid Shaheed sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 6.
The Saints desperately need depth at wideout. In addition, Shaheed is New Orleans’ kick returner. After breaking out as a WR2 last season, it’s probable the organization would prefer that he focus on his job as a receiver and delegate return duties to Jones, provided he’s up to the task. In any case, Jones is a low-cost depth player who has the ability to contribute in both positions.
Still, the Saints are anticipated to add more receiving options in the draft. New head coach Kellen Moore wants to surround quarterback Derek Carr with as many weapons as possible. Unfortunately, the team did little to boost its offense during free agency.
