The Dallas Cowboys may be on the verge of locking down one of their biggest stars for the long haul. According to league sources, team owner Jerry Jones and All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons are in early discussions regarding a massive new contract extension.
Parsons, 25, is still playing on his rookie contract, which runs through the 2025 season after the Cowboys picked up his fifth-year option. However, with his elite production and growing market value, Dallas appears eager to secure him before he reaches free agency.
Insiders report that Jones is willing to make Parsons one of the highest-paid defensive players in NFL history. The deal could potentially surpass the five-year, $140 million contract that San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa signed last year. With pass rushers seeing record-setting deals, Parsons is likely eyeing a figure north of $30 million annually.
Since being drafted 12th overall in 2021, Parsons has become one of the league’s most dominant defenders. In 2023, he recorded 14 sacks, 31 quarterback hits, and forced three fumbles, earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection. His ability to play both linebacker and edge rusher makes him a versatile weapon that opposing offenses struggle to contain.
News of a potential extension has sparked excitement among Cowboys fans, who view Parsons as the centerpiece of their defense. However, some are wary of the financial implications. With star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also due for a new deal, Dallas faces a tricky salary cap situation.
“We need Parsons locked in, but I hope Jerry doesn’t ruin the cap space,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter).
While no official agreement has been announced, sources suggest that talks are progressing positively. The Cowboys are reportedly aiming to finalize a deal before the 2025 season begins, ensuring Parsons remains in Dallas for the foreseeable future.
With Parsons anchoring the defense, the Cowboys are determined to build a Super Bowl-caliber roster — and keeping their superstar linebacker is the first step.
