As the Chicago Bears prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft, new head coach Ben Johnson faces a critical decision that could define his tenure. With the team holding valuable picks, including the No. 1 overall selection, many expect Chicago to grab a franchise quarterback. However, if Johnson truly wants the Bears to thrive, he should prioritize drafting the best running back available.
While the Bears have long struggled at quarterback, adding an elite running back could transform the offense overnight. With Caleb Williams widely projected as their top pick, pairing him with a dynamic, every-down back would immediately ease the pressure on the rookie signal-caller. A strong ground game not only controls the clock but also opens up the passing attack, giving Williams more play-action opportunities and keeping defenses honest.
The 2025 draft class features several standout running backs, including Michigan’s Donovan Edwards and Texas’ Jonathon Brooks. Both backs possess the explosiveness, vision, and versatility to become game-changers. Brooks, in particular, is drawing comparisons to Christian McCaffrey for his dual-threat ability, making him a perfect fit for Johnson’s creative offensive scheme.
Chicago’s current backfield lacks a true workhorse. Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson have shown flashes but lack the consistency to carry the load. Drafting a top-tier running back would give the Bears a reliable weapon who can handle 20+ touches a game, something they’ve been missing for year
While drafting a quarterback is essential, surrounding him with immediate weapons is just as crucial. The Detroit Lions, where Johnson previously served as offensive coordinator, thrived by pairing Jared Goff with a lethal backfield duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Replicating that formula in Chicago could fast-track the Bears’ rebuild.
If Ben Johnson wants to see his offensive vision come to life, he should prioritize selecting the best running back available. An elite rusher could provide the perfect balance to help a young quarterback flourish, giving the Bears a legitimate shot at becoming playoff contenders in the near future.
