PRESSING: 3 Critical Virginia Tech Football Questions Heading Into Spring Practices: What Will Define the Hokies’ Season?

As Virginia Tech football gears up for spring practices, the Hokies enter a crucial phase of preparation for the 2025 season. With a mixture of new faces, returning talent, and renewed optimism under head coach Brent Pry, there are burning questions that could define the trajectory of the team this year. Here are three critical questions Hokie fans should keep an eye on as spring practices unfold.

1. Who Will Emerge as the Starting Quarterback?

The quarterback position is the most pressing question heading into spring ball. With the departure of last year’s starter, all eyes are on transfer Kyron Drones, who comes from Baylor with high expectations. Drones, known for his dual-threat ability, will compete with returning players like Grant Wells. Wells struggled with consistency last season, leading to an open competition. The Hokies’ offense will need strong quarterback play to compete in the ACC, and the spring practices could set the tone for who takes the reins. Drones has the tools to be a game-changer, but he’ll need to prove his command of the offense in the coming weeks.

2. Can the Offensive Line Hold Up?

Virginia Tech’s offensive line performance in 2024 was inconsistent at best. Injuries and lack of depth exposed weaknesses, and the Hokies struggled to protect the quarterback and establish the run game. Improving the offensive line is key for any hopes of turning things around in 2025. The spring will be crucial for testing the depth and seeing how new additions and returning players gel. Offensive line coach Ron Crook has his work cut out for him, but the unit must show progress if the Hokies want to avoid a repeat of last year’s issues.

3. Is the Defense Ready to Bounce Back?

The Hokies’ defense, historically the strength of the team, took a step back last season. Injuries played a role, but depth and development were also concerns. With a healthier roster and new talent, Brent Pry will be looking to reestablish Virginia Tech as a defensive force in the ACC. Spring practices will be key for building chemistry and identifying key contributors, especially in the secondary and linebacker corps. If the defense can return to form, it will take pressure off the offense and keep the Hokies in more games.
