The Detroit Lions have made a major splash in free agency, addressing a critical need on defense by signing Denver Broncos standout linebacker Josey Jewell to a four-year contract worth $48 million, with $28 million guaranteed, league sources confirmed.
The Lions, who ranked 27th in total defense last season, have been aggressive in their offseason approach. General manager Brad Holmes made it clear that fortifying the defense was a top priority. By landing Jewell, Detroit fills a glaring hole at middle linebacker, adding physicality, experience, and high football IQ to their front seven.
“Josey is exactly the type of player we need,” Holmes said in a statement. “He brings toughness, leadership, and a relentless motor that will elevate our entire defense.”
Jewell joins a Lions defense that already features emerging stars like Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill, giving Detroit a much-needed enforcer at the second level. His presence should significantly boost the team’s run defense and provide stability in pass coverage against tight ends and running backs.
For the Broncos, losing Jewell is a major blow. The franchise was hoping to retain him, but Detroit’s aggressive offer proved too enticing. Jewell’s departure leaves a void in Denver’s linebacker corps, forcing them to seek replacements either through free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft.
Lions fans have plenty to be excited about with this move. Jewell’s addition signals that Detroit is fully committed to building a championship-caliber defense as they look to build on their NFC North-winning campaign from last season.
