The Detroit Lions are addressing their depth in the second wave of free agency by adding another veteran to their secondary.
According to NFL Network, the Lions have signed Rock Ya-Sin, a former San Francisco 49ers cornerback. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The 28-year-old defender is the Lions’ second defensive back signing this offseason, following former New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed. Reed’s signing filled the Lions’ starting cornerback vacancy when Carlton Davis left Detroit after one season to negotiate a lucrative contract with the New England Patriots.
However, the departures of versatile defender Ifeatu Melifonwu—who joined with the Miami Dolphins—and Kindle Vildor—who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—
He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, leaving the Lions short on secondary depth and a someone who can play special teams when needed.
The signing of Ya-Sin checks all of the boxes.
His production in 13 games with the 49ers last season was limited, with 62 snaps on defense and 107 on special teams. Throughout his six-year NFL career, he has proven to be a good defender.
The 2021 NFL season—his third in the league—was likely his greatest. Ya-Sin recorded 31 tackles, eight passes defended, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in 13 games (eight starts) with the Indianapolis Colts, who selected him 34th overall (second round) in the 2019 NFL Draft. Opposing quarterbacks completed only 53.3% of their throws while he was the primary defender in coverage.
In addition to the 49ers and Colts, Ya-Sin has also played for the Baltimore Ravens and the Las Vegas Raiders.
