Barnes received a coveted prize for anything other than his on-court performance. Barnes was honored on Wednesday as the winner of the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award for February. The award is named after Bob Lanier, an NBA Hall of Famer, League Office official, and NBA Cares Ambassador for over 30 years. Barnes won the Community Assist Award for the second time in his career in February, having previously won the 2019-2020 NBA Cares End of Season Community Assist Award.

Barnes and his wife, Brittany, donated $250,000 to AlamoPROMISE, a program that covers the cost of tuition and fees for qualifying Bear County students, removing financial barriers to higher education. The grant will benefit students at St. Phillip’s College in San Antonio, an HBCU and Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). In its five-year history, the AlamoPROMISE program has helped over 23,000 students pay for tuition and college expenses.
Barnes also helped bring a newly refurbished basketball court and playground to Davis White Northeast Neighborhood Park in Austin, Texas, as part of the Play ATX program.

Barnes got the David Robinson Trophy at a ceremony before Wednesday night’s game against the New York Knicks. In addition, the NBA will make a $10,000 donation to the San Antonio African American Community Archives and Museum. “Throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of experiencing the power of community and support,” according to Barnes. “Now, as members of the San Antonio community, my wife Brittany and I are proud to give back and invest in the future of this amazing city.

She shoots, she scores! Our guys stopped by the Her Time to Play clinic and had the best time with the next generation of athletes 💪

Partnering with AlamoPROMISE and St. Philip’s College is my way of ensuring that local youth get the resources and opportunity they need to achieve. It is about fostering long-term change, bridging gaps, and empowering the next generation of leaders. My wife and I are both highly devoted to becoming community advocates, and we’re delighted to work together to make a significant impact and help local college students pursue their aspirations.”
