The popular Netflix series “Quarterback” is returning after a season off from focusing on the position, and Detroit Lions standout Jared Goff will be one of three players featured.
The other two are Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals) and Kirk Cousins (Atlanta Falcons), a former Michigan State standout and Holland, Mich. native, according to a video uploaded by Netflix on social media Wednesday. Netflix announced that the new season will premiere in July.
Goff’s imminent appearance comes one season after the series was forced to shift gears and concentrate on pass-catchers, notably Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff, along with other quarterbacks in the league, were approached prior to the position change, but declined to participate.
A multitude of reasons,” Goff said in an interview with 97.1-FM last year, when asked why he didn’t want to be part of the show. “I’m not sure if the way they do it is as distracting as some people believe, but it wasn’t the perfect match for me this year. Maybe someday.
One day has arrived.
The first season of the series, which tries to tell the tales of players on and off the field, focused on quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes, Marcus Mariota, and Kirk Cousins. In addition to St. Brown, the second iteration — suitably dubbed “Receiver” — featured Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, George Kittle, and Deebo Samuel. Both versions of the series consisted of eight episodes, each lasting approximately an hour.
Goff comes off a season in which he finished fifth in MVP voting, trailing Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Philadelphia’s Saquon Barkley, and Burrow. He completed 72.4% of his throws for 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in 2024, helping the Lions win a franchise-record 15 games before being defeated by the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. His passing success percentage (54.7%) was a career high, as were his yardage per attempt (8.6), passer rating (111.8), and ESPN quarterback rating (68.4).
The 30-year-old Goff, who recently completed his ninth season in the league, was selected first overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2016 NFL Draft. He played with the team for five seasons before being dealt to Detroit as part of the deal that sent Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. Goff won a four-year contract deal worth up to $212 million after leading the Lions to a playoff victory over the Rams in 2023, the franchise’s first in more nearly three decades.
