What was once a symbolic tattoo on his arm symbolizing his affection for his hometown team is now Avonte Maddox’s professional residence.
According to NFL Network, the veteran cornerback has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. With this trade, the Lions now have seven cornerbacks under contract for the 2025 season. Maddox joins D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw, Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, Khalil Dorsey, and Stantley Thomas-Oliver, who all signed reserve/future contracts in January.
Maddox, a Detroit native who attended Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, will depart the Philadelphia Eagles after seven seasons. He was picked in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft.
The 28-year-old defender is yet another important depth addition made by the Lions. Maddox, who recently won Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles, has excellent information and experience that will benefit the Lions’ young secondary.
Maddox appeared in 17 games last season, taking 345 defensive snaps and 193 special teams snaps.
Maddox, who has played all positions in the secondary, from cornerback to safety, provides the versatility the Lions require after Ifeatu Melifonwu left to join the Miami Dolphins. He’s also a proven and seasoned starter when needed, which will be beneficial for a squad that has struggled with secondary injuries in recent seasons.
