GOOD NEWS: Proposed Jaire Alexander trade sends $84 million cornerback to retooling AFC squad

The Las Vegas Raiders are attempting to improve this offseason in order to return to playoff football for the first time since 2021 after ending the 2024 season with a 4-13 record and last in the AFC West.

In recent months, players have come and gone in trades and free agency, and Las Vegas has seen the departure of general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce in favor of John Spytek and Pete Carroll, respectively.

They might be seeking to improve their secondary after their defense gave up 1.7 passing touchdowns per game (tied for 27th) and 216.1 passing yards per game (16th in the NFL) in 2024.

A starting cornerback might still be acquired through a deal, even though there aren’t many excellent free agent possibilities available. Sportsnaut’s Moe Moton recently named Jaire Alexander as a Raiders trade target this offseason.

Alexander, 28, attended Louisville during his collegiate career from 2015 to 2017, and in his third season with the Cardinals, he was named to the second team of the ACC.

Alexander was taken in the first round (at number 18 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers, who immediately started him as a rookie.

Alexander has recorded 287 tackles (12 for a loss), 70 passes defensed, 12 interceptions, four fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, and 1.5 sacks during his seven seasons with the Packers. He has also been named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team twice.

Alexander missed 10 games in 2024 with quadriceps and knee injuries, including the team’s final seven games of the season, after missing 10 games in 2023 with shoulder and back issues. He only managed 16 tackles, seven passes defensed, two interceptions, and one fumble recovery in those seven games last season.

He was ranked 24th out of 222 eligible NFL cornerbacks last season by Pro Football Focus, which gave him an overall grade of 75.2 for his performance. In addition, he had a 57.8 run-defense grade (147th) and a 78.3 coverage grade (16th).

Alexander signed a four-year, $84 million contract with Green Bay prior to the 2022 season, and he still has two years left on it. But according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the organization is open to moving him this offseason.

If they could make a deal, Alexander would be the best cornerback in Las Vegas in 2025, but the price would need to be acceptable to both parties. Given the cornerback’s recent injury history, it would be risky, but the Raiders might find it worthwhile to
