While the offseason is coming to an end as the regular season MLB schedule begins, there was no bigger story this winter than Juan Soto’s free agency sweepstakes. Throughout Soto’s long, drawn-out process of leaving the New York Yankees for the New York Mets on a 15-year, $765 million contract, it was unclear why he chose to leave one already competitive big-market club for another.
Sure, the actual free agency offers were undoubtedly the most important component involved. But we are talking about the Yankees. Would they actually refuse to match an offer from their crosstown rivals? There must be another component involved…
Juan Soto had long-term concerns regarding the New York Yankees.
There is nothing the New York Yankees can do to avoid losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets. This is all history.
Still, Soto, who recently spoke with Sports Illustrated, confessed that the Yankees were his first choice to join with. However, after considering all of the aspects in his different offers, doubts arose regarding the Yankees’ long-term capacity to retain their success in comparison to the Mets, who spend freely.
“The Yankees were number one from the start. When you consider how lengthy this contract will last, it was simply a matter of making that decision. What do they have in their farm system? How many times can we do well on this team? I know the Yankees are going to be good for the next five or six seasons. We’re not sure what happens after that.”
The Yankees, not the Mets, made it to the World Series last season. Nonetheless, Soto has complete faith in Mets owner Steve Cohen, stating that he “gives him all my trust.” We’ll get to see if Soto’s decision pays off over the next decade-plus, albeit in a Mets outfit rather than the Yankees’ pinstripes.
