With Jimmy Garoppolo re-signed as Matthew Stafford’s backup, the Los Angeles Rams have no need for another quarterback. Even said, neither Garoppolo nor Stafford will be in Hollywood indefinitely, so the Rams must plan for the future. That being said, Los Angeles should give Trey Lance one more chance to rekindle his NFL career.
Lance hasn’t seen enough of the field to justify his first-round ranking. The North Dakota State product struggled with injuries and mismanagement while with the 49ers before failing to make the cut as Dak Prescott’s backup. To be honest, he has never been given a fair opportunity to show the league what he is capable of.
But why bother trying to rescue anything from the Niners’ trash? For crying out loud.
This was the same player that threw five interceptions during a preseason game last year.
I’ve written twice about how the Rams should acquire Lance. Los Angeles would be a great place for him to develop because he is a free agent and will only be 25 years old when the season begins.
Sean McVay is a quarterback guru who has revitalized signal callers like Jared Goff (early in his career), Baker Mayfield, and, to some extent, Carson Wentz. This alone cannot be stressed. Furthermore, Lance would be studying from Stafford, who remains one of the NFL’s finest quarterbacks, particularly in the NFC, where the cupboard is rather bare. Lance made a mistake by not returning to school when he did. If he had, he would probably have become the first quarterback.
selected at the horrible 2022 draft. Kenny Pickett cannot possibly be a more polished choice than he is.
However, Lance does not deserve to be punished for a bad start in his career. Lance is not culpable by any means, but teams have no tolerance for training young, inexperienced quarterbacks. Very few clubs are willing to be patient with their players as the Bills were with Josh Allen.
Kyle Shanahan appeared to have no idea how to deploy Lance, and that, combined with San Francisco’s Super Bowl expectations, was a recipe for the young gun’s success. Lance, as expected, will have few suitors now that Dallas has cut him.
First-round failures, particularly quarterbacks, seldom see another.
After failing with their second team, they have another shot. Currently. Lance’s career is similar to Josh Rosen’s, in that it was first overhyped before fading into irrelevancy.
To keep Lance from continuing down that path, partnering him with McVay may be his only option. Of course, the Rams do have Stetson Bennett on their roster. Trey is unnecessary unless the two compete for the third quarterback position behind Jimmy G. I know the chances of L.A. signing Lance are minimal, but slim odds are preferable to none at all.
