The Detroit Lions have under increasing pressure in recent seasons.
In 2023, they nearly defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, proving their place among the league’s finest.
That set high hopes for 2024, and the Lions delivered, finishing 15-2 during the regular season.
Unfortunately, they fell far short of expectations during the postseason, being ousted in their first playoff game of the year.
Expectations for the 2025 season have risen again, and it appears that quarterback Jared Goff may face additional pressure.
Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports placed Goff fourth among quarterbacks under the most pressure to win the Super Bowl.
Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen were the three quarterbacks who faced the most pressure.
Goff has already had his first chance at the Super Bowl. He led the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018.
It did not go well for him. He only completed 19 of 38 passes and threw an interception in a 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots. The three points were matched for the fewest ever in a Super Bowl.
Following the loss, Goff took a lot of the blame.
During his time with the Lions, he has demonstrated that he is a far superior quarterback to what we witnessed in the loss to the Patriots.
There is just slight pressure on him right now because he has helped the Lions become legitimate contenders.
When the Lions return to the playoffs, he’ll need to improve on his three interceptions against the Commanders.
However, he has given fans plenty of reason to believe that performance was an outlier, with three consecutive seasons of over 4000 yards and a fifth-place finish in the MVP voting this season.
Before he can compete for another Super Bowl, Goff will have to navigate a full NFC North and plenty of tough postseason competition, but we all know the trophy will be the only thing on the Lions’ thoughts coming into the 2025 season.
