Fans have been waiting for big Victor Wembanyama news for what seems like an eternity, but that has changed. Maxime Aubin, a French reporter, has been in San Antonio covering the Alien since he crashed two summers ago, and he posted the most recent update on the 7’4″ phenomena on social media today.
The first bit of news was not anticipated. Wembanyama was always expected to have surgery eventually. things’s a good thing things happened, because he can now focus on recovery. If only that were the conclusion of the report. Wemby’s desire to play for his home nation has not diminished in the slightest as a result of Aubin’s announcement that the Spurs franchise player intends to compete in the Eurobasket tournament.
Wembanyama continues to demonstrate he is precisely who he says he is.
Vic enjoys basketball. There’s no way around it. People do not devote the amount of time and energy required to live their life in great discipline unless they genuinely love what they are doing it for. That’s wonderful news for San Antonio because it indicates that his motivations are genuine and come from the right place.
Wembanyama last represented France in the Paris Olympics last summer. He had a few inconsistent offensive performances during the games, but he still led his team in most categories and showed up when it mattered most in the Gold Medal Game versus Team USA.
Wembanyama has been out for the season for five weeks after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). According to medical specialists, the recuperation time for this ailment is estimated to be at least a few months, with the Eurobasket Tournament beginning on August 27. That falls outside of the six-month recuperation window. The event will run till September 14.
Wemby is young and physically fit, therefore I expect him to recover faster than the average person. He has never failed to surprise us with his abilities, so why should we expect him to deviate from the norm now?
The tournament’s late start date provides the big man with ample time to prepare, and with him in the mix, France has as strong a chance as anyone to win.
The rules are the same as in the Olympic event, therefore each team will be divided into groups. Each team will play every other team in their group at least once, and the teams that performed well in Group Play will advance to the Knockout Stage, when single-game elimination rules will apply.
France is in the same group as Slovenia, so if Luka Doncic participates, Vic will get to play LA’s new star much earlier than expected.
That’s just one of numerous intriguing matches Wembanyama will have if
