FINAL DECISION: Lions Make Waves with Massive Four-Year, Huge Million-Dollar Contract Extension, Including Huge Guaranteed Sum

The Detroit Lions made waves during the 2024 season when they signed developing defensive tackle Alim McNeill to a four-year, $97 million contract extension, with $55 million guaranteed. While the front office saw the trade as a long-term investment in one of their most important defenders, not everyone agrees that it was the right decision.

Alim McNeill’s contract is under scrutiny.
Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report recently identified each NFL team’s most overpriced player, and McNeill was named Detroit’s. Gagnon voiced concern about the size of the contract for a player who, while talented, has yet to produce a real breakout season.Jared Goff leads Lions to first playoff win in 32 years, 24-23 over the Rams | AP News

“When will McNeill break through?” Gagnon inquired, emphasizing the 24-year-old’s continuous progress. “He’s due more than $85 million between 2026 and 2028, and that’s a steep price for someone still working to fully establish himself.”

Production versus Paycheck McNeill’s raw stats don’t exactly scream superstar—he had 25 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and seven tackles for loss in 14 games last season. Nonetheless, Pro Football Focus rated him well, placing him 11th out of 219 interior defensive lineman for 2024. Injury Increases Risk.
McNeill’s ruptured ACL in 2024 has fueled the discussion. While the organization believes he will return in time for the 2025 season, any significant injury raises concerns.

Despite these worries, Detroit designed the transaction with flexibility. The Lions can opt out after 2026 without causing significant long-term harm to their cap sheet, giving a financial safety valve if McNeill does not perform at the level his salary predicts.

Final Thoughts
The Lions certainly value Alim McNeill’s potential and leadership on the defensive line. However, as detractors such as Gagnon point out, the onus is now on McNeill to demonstrate that he can be more than just solid—he must be extraordinary. How he recovers from injury and performs over the next two seasons will determine whether Detroit’s gamble was a wise one or a costly mistake.
