BREAKING: OFFICIAL; Lions GM Brad Holmes Gives Contract Extension Update For Aidan Hutchinson

The Detroit Lions are entering a critical offseason for the future of some of their most promising young players. During this week’s NFL Annual League Meetings, general manager Brad Holmes addressed the contract issues of two standouts from the 2022 draft class: Aidan Hutchinson and Kerby Joseph.

Aidan Hutchinson Extension Could Be Expensive.

Detroit Lions Drop Big News on Aidan Hutchinson
When questioned about Hutchinson, who is recovering from a leg injury that ended his 2024 season prematurely, Holmes stated unequivocally that extending the great pass rusher is part of the long-term plan—though it will be costly. With premier edge rushers now commanding contracts of more than $40 million per year, Detroit will need to make a significant financial commitment to retain Hutchinson.

“Look, it’s what it is,” Holmes said. “We had it in that range when we were planning and budgeting for the future. But, obviously, when it goes up, it just goes up, and you have to be prepared for it. I’m not sure what it will wind up being. That is the most difficult aspect of our profession, yet we try really hard to predict the market. He’s simply one of several expenses we’ve had to cover.”

Hutchinson, the former No. 2 overall pick, has been a key member of Detroit’s defense since his arrival, and it appears that the organization will do whatever it takes to keep him.

The Lions want to keep All-Pro Kerby Joseph.

The situation with Kerby Joseph is also worth watching. Following an All-Pro season in which he led the league with nine interceptions, Joseph has emerged as one of the NFL’s best safeties. Holmes was candid while discussing Detroit’s intention to sign him to a contract extension.

“He’s a player that we want to keep and, you know, we’ve let that be known,” says Holmes. “He’s a good fit for us and our team.” He’s a great player, but in terms of timing, we’ll just have to see how it unfolds.”

Though no timeframe has been set for Joseph’s agreement, both parties look eager to get things done.

What’s next?

The Lions are in a wonderful position with two of the league’s best young defensive players, but long-term success will necessitate careful cap management. While no extensions have been completed, Holmes’ message was clear: Hutchinson and Joseph are both foundational pieces, and Detroit intends to keep them.
