There is a bright side to Green Bay Packers star cornerback Jaire Alexander’s injury problems. Two years remain on the two-time All-Pro’s four-year, $84 million contract deal, which was renegotiated in 2023. Due to health concerns, Alexander has not produced much for the Packers during this deal, despite the restructuring. With just 14 games played over the last two years, the 28-year-old may be traded this offseason.
But over the last two seasons, Green Bay has had more cap flexibility thanks to Alexander’s injuries. Because of the cornerback’s absence, the team has an insurance cap advantage of $1,074,702, according to Packers salary cap expert Ken Ingals.
Although head coach Matt LaFleur has guided Green Bay to two consecutive postseason appearances during the Jordan Love era, the team just finished this past season third in the NFC North and lost in the Wild Card round of the playoffs—one round earlier than the previous year’s squad finished. Green Bay currently ranks tenth in salary space amid this crucial offseason.
In his six years as manager, LaFleur has been excellent. He has yet to reach the Super Bowl, though, and is still awaiting that leap from good to great. With eight total picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, Green Bay still boasts one of the league’s youngest rosters. The Packers haven’t done much in free agency, with the exception of a few defensive and offensive line improvements. This team still needs a pass rusher and another wide receiver. Additionally, this team will undoubtedly need another CB if Alexander is dealt.
Overall, the next few months will determine Green Bay’s next couple of years. The Detroit Lions will be the favorite in the NFC North heading into next season. At the same time, the Chicago Bears are finally on the rise again, while the Minnesota Vikings remain threatening.
This was the NFL’s greatest division, despite its poor playoff performance, and things won’t get any easier from here on out. But Green Bay is gradually reestablishing itself as a contender. The question is whether Matt LaFleur and this team will make the next .
