The New York Mets are the second-best team in the National League East. Their offense, on the other hand, has gotten off to a poor start and is performing below league average. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The Mets will receive some reinforcements with the return of starters Jeff McNeil and Francisco Alvarez in the near future.
Those additions will undoubtedly assist an ailing Mets lineup, but they may have larger issues that require an external solution. Their center field performance has been mediocre this season, which may limit their postseason potential. A deal is one approach for New York to handle this issue.
According to Kerry Miller of Bleacher Reports, Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert could be a trade target for the Mets. “With left fielder Brandon Nimmo more than capable of playing center, the Mets do have the flexibility to pursue either a CF or LF,” he said in the letter. “… Robert is the big name out there all but certain to be available, but both the Orioles and Giants have multiple outfielders who are likely headed for free agency this winter.”
Between 2021 and 2023, Robert slashed.287/.331/.511 for a.842 OPS and 130 OPS+. The former All-Star and Silver Slugger can be a five-tool player, but the right-handed outfielder had a nightmare season last year.
In 100 games, he posted an OPS of.657 and 1.4 bWAR, a far cry from his days of superstardom. Robert has not started the season well, with only six hits in 39 at-bats. The Mets may want to buy low on someone who was once regarded as MLB’s next young superstar.
