The Mets lost 3-1 to the Athletics on Saturday. Despite the setback, New York remains tied atop the National League East division with a 9-5 record after 14 games. As their offense has struggled, New York has relied on the greatest pitching staff in the MLB. The Mets lead baseball with a 2.47 team ERA and have limited opponents to a.220 batting average. This has neutralized the Mets’ offense, which ranks 21st in runs scored. Outside of Juan Soto, New York’s outfield has been particularly underwhelming offensively. One newcomer the Mets hoped would give a spark was center fielder Jose Siri.
However, the 29-year-old has just one hit in his first 20 at-bats and is also suffering with an ailment.
Siri left the game after fouling a ball off his shin in Saturday’s setback. The Mets later stated that he had suffered a left shin contusion and that his status was day-to-day. While the team’s report indicated the injury was not significant, Siri revealed after the game that he is in a lot of pain and does not “have any power” in that leg right now (via SNY). Despite Siri’s agony, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that his X-rays were negative, which is good news.
Siri has primarily been recognized as a defense-first outfielder, but New York hoped to see something akin to his 105 OPS+ in 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays. While his 2025 campaign has not begun well, Siri appears to have averted catastrophic damage after leaving Saturday’s game in a lot of agony.
