The Green Bay Packers have shaken up the NFL landscape in an unexpected move just days before the 2025 NFL Draft. Late Friday evening, the Packers completed a startling transaction by trading Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander and their 2025 first-round pick (No. 25 overall) to the New England Patriots in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft.
The decision sent shockwaves across the league, as the Packers—who were largely expected to be looking for help at wide receiver or offensive line—now have a chance to land one of the top talents in the draft, maybe a franchise-changing player.
The unexpected transaction also shows that Green Bay’s front staff sees a limited window of opportunity to compete and is ready to take risky moves to capitalize.
“This is a seismic shift in our approach,” stated Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst at a late-night press conference. “We believe we’re on the cusp of something special, and acquiring a top-three pick gives us the flexibility to add a true difference-maker.”
The Packers’ pick has sparked speculation about who they intend to target. While USC quarterback Caleb Williams and North Carolina’s Drake Maye are likely to be the first two picks, Green Bay could be looking at Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., who many consider to be the best non-quarterback in the class.
Pairing Harrison with rising quarterback Jordan Love could give the Packers a lethal one-two punch on offense for years to come.
On the flip side, the Patriots receive a proven exceptional defender in Alexander, who immediately boosts their secondary, as well as a mid-first-round pick to build around. It’s a deliberate move for a team that may be wanting to reset without having to start fully from scratch.
“Jaire brings toughness, leadership, and elite coverage ability to our defense,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo stated. “We’re thrilled to bring in a player of his caliber as we continue building our roster.”
Packers supporters were caught off stride by the news, since Alexander has long been a fan favorite and one of the most reliable performers on the club. But many people recognize the benefits of climbing into the top three.
“This could be the move that finally gets us back to the Super Bowl,” said Mark Halverson, a longtime fan and season ticket holder. “It’s risky, yeah—but fortune favors the bold.”
With only days until the draft, the on is now squarely on the Packers to perform. When draft night begins and the clock starts ticking, all eyes will be on them. Will they take a chance on a generational star or package the selection in another risky move? Regardless, Green Bay has sent a strong message.
