Eric Weddle, Super Bowl LVI champion and former Los Angeles Rams safety, has lit up the NFL world with his recent endorsement of a surprise free agent signing. Weddle, known for his leadership, grit, and high football IQ, startled supporters by pledging his entire support to a player whose signing has elicited conflicting feelings from Rams Nation. During a recent podcast appearance, Weddle expressed his excitement over the Rams signing veteran linebacker Shaquille Leonard, a former All-Pro whose career has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency over the last two years. While some fans were cautiously enthusiastic, others instantly questioned whether Leonard could ever regain his old form. But for Weddle, the answer was obvious.
“If he’s healthy, this is a steal,” Weddle remarked. “I don’t care what others say; this guy can still ball. People have forgotten who Shaq Leonard was only a few seasons ago. I really like the new location.”
That message soon spread throughout social media, with many fans reacting angrily to Weddle’s outspoken praise.
“Are you kidding me?” a fan wrote on X (previously Twitter). “Does Weddle honestly believe Leonard is the answer? “He’s barely been on the field!”
Another remarked, “I respect Weddle, but this is a strange interpretation. Leonard has not looked the same in a long time.
The Colts released Leonard, a three-time All-Pro and 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year, during the 2023 season due to injury.
After a brief experience with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he failed to make an impression, his NFL future was doubtful. That’s what made Weddle’s enthusiastic endorsement so unexpected – and divisive.
However, Weddle refused to back down. In a subsequent part, he stressed Leonard’s football instincts, leadership, and possible fit in the Rams’ defensive scheme under new coordinator Chris Shula.
“He’s not being asked to be the 2020 version of himself right away,” Weddle added. “He only needs to contribute leadership, expertise, and some muscle. If he provides you even 75% of what he used to be, that’s a victory.”
The Rams, fresh off a promising but ultimately short playoff run, are plainly eager to add experience to a youthful and maturing defense. With Ernest Jones as the linebacker corps leader, some believe Leonard could thrive in a more limited, focused role — if his body holds up. However, fans remain split. Some have welcomed Weddle’s take, calling it “bold but inspiring,” while others remain skeptical, calling Leonard “washed” and unworthy of the hype. Only time will tell if Weddle’s controversial endorsement will age like fine wine — or turn into another case of misplaced faith.
