Almost everyone performed well for the New York Mets in their 8-0 win over the Athletics on Sunday, even struggling third baseman Brett Baty. The 25-year-old smacked an RBI triple in the ninth inning, his first of the season. Kodai Senga, the ace pitcher, threw seven shutout innings, striking out four against two walks and four hits. The right-hander’s record is at 2-1, with a 1.06 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Baty also assisted Senga by turning both of the Mets’ (10-5) double plays, both times fielding a grounder at third and passing it to Luisangel Acuna at second, who then threw it to Pete Alonso at first base.
The first was in the second inning, and the second in the third. Senga was happy with Baty’s efforts, according to SNY.
“Atta boy,” the 6-foot-1-inch, 202-pounder remarked. Baty is currently slashing. 139/.139/.222 for the season.
Baty may not have much time left to impress in New York’s lineup, as utility guy Jeff McNeil (oblique) nears a comeback. The 33-year-old started his rehab assignment on Friday and scored a single for Single-A St. Lucie on Sunday. He’s set to play for Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, according to SNY. When McNeil returns, the Mets may consider optioning Baty to the minors.
New York leads the National League East by one game over the Philadelphia Phillies. It will wrap up its road trip with a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Monday before returning home to meet the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
