OFFICIAL: Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell Officially Confirms Team is Moving On from Veteran Star, With Full Details Released

The Detroit Lions have been making difficult decisions throughout the offseason, and they will continue to do so until the season begins. With those decisions sometimes comes the team parting ways with cherished players, and numerous NFL experts and commentators believe that one favorite Lions player’s days may be short.

This athlete possesses a great deal of raw talent and skill, but he has also had some issues with the NFL during his time with the Lions.

In an April 14 piece for A to Z Sports, Mike Payton claims that Detroit Lions’ Jameson Williams could be dealt, despite popular opinion.

“Everyone wants things to work out between Jameson Williams and the Detroit Lions. But, man, you can’t deny that Detroit just brought in practically another version of Williams for a top-30 visit over the weekend,” he said.

Payton is referring to the Lions’ hosting of Texas WR Matthew Golden, one of the top receivers in the 2025 draft. Payton suggests that Golden “brings a lot of what Williams has brought to the Lions, but without some of the on-field issues, like tracking the ball, for example.” Of course, Williams was suspended for gambling troubles, and he was detained by Detroit police in November with a hidden firearm.

“Those things may not matter much to us, but we aren’t the ones who have to pay him when the time comes,” Payton says.

Brad Berreman of SideLion Report also believes Williams’ days are limited. He recalls that during league meetings this year, Lions general manager Brad Holmes stated that they had picked up Williams’ fifth-year option but that it would be difficult to keep him for the next two seasons.

Berreman further adds, “Golden is widely regarded as either the second- or third-best wide receiver in this year’s draft.”

“An easy comp for Golden is New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave,” Berreman says. “In general, the Lions making a significant trade up from the 28th overall pick appears plausible, and that’s what they’d have to do to get Golden. If they do so and choose him, Williams’ long-term prospects in Detroit will be called into question.”

Golden is so amazing that The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has taken notice. “Fluid in and out of his breaks, Golden shows a plan as a route runner — I love his ability to break down corners by keeping his eyes, hips, and feet in sync,” Brugler wrote on April 9, 2016. Brugler adds, “Overall, it may annoy some teams that he lacks greater size, but Golden also has no obvious faults in his game that would prevent him from being an effective pro. He can play inside or outside and become the primary target for an NFL offense.”
