The San Diego Padres have provided a positive report on first baseman Luis Arraez following a harrowing occurrence during Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros.
Arraez collided with Astros second baseman Mauricio Dubon in the first inning at Daikin Park in Houston, Texas, while attempting to beat out a drag bunt. Arraez’s head collided with Dubon’s shoulder, leaving the Padres hitter stunned on the ground. Arraez had to be brought out on a stretcher (see video).
Speaking to reporters following San Diego’s 3-2 victory, Padres manager Mike Shildt revealed that Arraez “wasn’t aware of where he was” before his condition improved. Shildt remarked that Arraez appears to have avoided a far more serious injury.
“Best-case scenario with Luis,” Shildt told The Athletic’s Chandler Rome and Dennis Lin. “Obviously, this is really scary. We think he’s mostly out of the woods. Although further testing is necessary, the initial results are promising. His initial concussion tests was positive, and he is presently recovering. All things considered, that is a blessing.”
Arraez sustained a laceration on his jawline but avoided any facial fractures. Shildt voiced concern regarding Arraez’s cervical spine, which will be further tested.
One significant improvement was Arraez’s ability to return to the Padres’ clubhouse before the conclusion of Sunday’s game.
Arraez is perhaps the majors’ top contact hitter. The 28-year-old is the first player in Major League Baseball history to win three consecutive batting titles while playing for three different teams. He has a.287 batting average in 22 games this season.
