Green Bay, Wisconsin — In a stunning move that sent shockwaves through the NFL just days before the 2025 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers have officially parted ways with two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, trading him to the Houston Texans in a blockbuster deal that ends a major chapter in Green Bay’s defensive identity.
Alexander will be traded to Houston in return for a second-round pick in this year’s draft and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2026. The transaction was consummated late Tuesday night. It is a significant departure for the Packers’ front staff, as they want to rebuild a young, fast defense around developing stars and new coach Jeff Hafley’s aggressive scheme.
Alexander, 27, was once regarded as the backbone of the Packers’ secondary. He was drafted in the first round of 2018 and soon established himself as one of the league’s top shutdown corners. However, injuries and inconsistency over the previous two seasons, combined with a large contract extension signed in 2022, made his future in Green Bay dubious.
“We’ve made a difficult but strategic decision that we believe will position us for future success,” GM Brian Gutekunst said in a statement. “Jaire is a terrific talent, and we appreciate everything he’s done for Green Bay. This shift opens up new options for us today and in the future.”
Inside the dressing area, there were conflicting reactions. Some players were shocked, while others recognized the business side of sport.
