This offseason, the Detroit Lions have been the subject of incessant conjecture about their top wide receiver, Jameson Williams. Williams’ future has been hotly debated as he enters his fourth season in Detroit following his breakout 2024 season, owing to the escalating expense of great pass catchers. Many assumed that the Lions would want to trade the former first-round choice now rather than give him a hefty contract extension that could strain the front office financially.
Last Monday, Detroit activated Williams’ fifth-year option, putting an end to these suspicions for at least another year. They now have the freedom to analyze their club for another season and negotiate a contract with their best deep ball threat for 2026.
Dan Campbell and Jameson Williams End All Speculation During Offseason Drama.
Previously, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was hesitant to commit to Williams’ long-term contract. He teased picking up the 24-year-old’s fifth-year option and recently disclosed that they never considered trading Williams.
That is not to say they will not consider it in the 2026 offseason.
Detroit has already made Kerby Joseph the highest-paid safety in the league, and Aidan Hutchinson is expected to become the league’s second-highest-paid pass rusher after Myles Garrett soon. Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, and Sam LaPorta are all available for extensions next year.
While the Lions would like to retain all of their top players, it may not be financially feasible. Depending on how the 2025 Lions season goes, Williams may be the odd man out in this deep, talented, and pricey group.
For the time being, Williams and Campbell appear to be looking forward to continuing their collaboration for at least another season.
