Atlanta Hawks get Terry Rozier, Duncan Robinson, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Nikola Jović, Pelle Larsson, 2025 No. 20 (Golden State Warriors), Miami 2030 protected first-rounder, and a $19.4 million trade exception.
Trae Young is acquired by the Miami Heat.
“The Heat have two big men who can help protect the paint in Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware,” Pincus suggested. “Andrew Wiggins remains a competent wing with defensive abilities. Teams would have a difficult time dealing with the All-Star backcourt of Young and Herro, but coach Erik Spoelstra would face defensive concerns. It’s not a “no-brainer,” but the talent boost may be difficult to argue against, assuming the Heat believe Young can fill the team’s scoring void.”
Adding Young would ensure that Miami matches the All-Star production missed when Jimmy Butler was forced to leave the franchise earlier this season. However, Erik Spoelstra’s defense-first mentality may need to adapt in order to maximize the potential of a Young-led group.
Heat Likely to Keep Davion Mitchell
Whether or not Miami decides to pursue an All-Star guard, it’s evident that Davion Mitchell has a place in South Beach. The defensive-minded guard is set to enter restricted free agency this summer.
According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the Heat would prefer to keep Mitchell with the team for the long haul.
“According to someone with direct knowledge, the Heat ideally would like to keep point guard Davion Mitchell, an impending restricted free agent who has thrived in a bench role recently after his February acquisition from Toronto,” Jackson told ESPN. “But the type of offers he gets in restricted free agency could force Miami’s hand.”
Mitchell has been spectacular since he arrived in Miami. He has also played an important part in the current playoff series with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Adding Young Could Make Sense.
The Heat struggled during the 2024-25 regular season, ranking 21st in offensive rating. Their lack of playmaking and scoring created a disjointed offense throughout the basketball season. Young would immediately resolve both of these issues. He’s a superb three-level scorer who can create for himself and teammates, and his scoring gravity bends defenses to his will.
Furthermore, Young’s surprising scoring outbursts can help his club win a postseason series. If Miami can find a way to address his defensive weaknesses while also getting the most out of him offensively, he may be a good match.
Of course, the Atlanta Hawks would have to be willing participants in trade negotiations.
And as of right now, that might be the largest obstacle to any possible agreement that would bring Young to Miami this summer.
