Bogaerts becomes the Lightning Rod.
The Padres’ 1-0 defeat on Friday, followed by a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, was more than just another loss—it was a public breakdown.
Missed opportunities, poor at-bats, and a quiet night at the plate focused the spotlight squarely on Bogaerts. Despite his candid postgame remarks, in which he acknowledged the team’s offensive failings and demanded accountability, supporters online were uninterested in patience or perspective. On Saturday, they unleashed a barrage of tweets, memes, and hashtags directed at the veteran shortstop.
One fan compared Bogaerts’ position to one of the Padres’ worst signings in history. He commented on X late Saturday: “Guys, Xander Bogaerts’ situation will be worse than Eric Hosmer’s.” Way, way worse.
For Padres supporters, the indignation is nothing new. This season’s narrative has been characterized by “almosts” and squandered opportunities. Bogaerts, a major signing two years ago who was anticipated to help San Diego return to contention, has instead become a symbol of the team’s larger shortcomings. As the offense struggled once more, calls for change became stronger, ranging from lineup changes to more drastic moves.
Another fan said on X: “I don’t generally say this about guys, but you probably have to eat the money and let Xander Bogaerts go at this point. It’s that horrible. “He’ll cost you 2-3 games per week.”
A team struggling for answers—and a scapegoat.
