MLB DAILY REPORT: NY Mets Has Stun The Entire MLB World and Mets Fan Base With Shocking Pete Alonso Decision After Brutal and Devastating Loss to Nationals

The New York Mets lost a 7-1 lead against the Washington Nationals on Sunday, losing 8-7 in their second walk-off loss of the series. While New York’s bullpen battled, first baseman Pete Alonso made an error that ended the game. After right-handed relief pitcher Ryne Stanek allowed the tying run to score in the ninth inning, his second failed save in three games, he induced a seemingly routine ground ball to first base. As Stanek attempted to cover first, Alonso soared the ball over his head. The error allowed Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams to score the game-winning run.

While Alonso is not recognized for his defense, this was his first error of the 2025 Major League Baseball season. It occurred at a horrible time, as a solid throw to Stanek would have given the Mets two outs and an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth inning. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was queried about the game-losing play by media after the game. “We didn’t make a play,” he explained. “Routine play and we didn’t make it.”

Despite this crushing loss, the Mets still lead the National League East with a 19-9 record. Nonetheless, they are now only 7-8 away from Citi Field, where they boast an MLB-best home record of 12-1 through 13 games.
