According to a league source, Gabe Madsen, a talented three-point shooter whose accuracy drastically declined at Utah the previous season, has verbally agreed to a temporary stay with the Heat for training camp. The 6-5 Madsen had two appearances at Cincinnati as a freshman before moving to Utah, where he started 103 games and made 120 appearances overall. Last season, he shot 37.1 percent from the field and 32.2 percent from three-point range, averaging 15.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists. His three-point shooting percentages of 39.3, 36.9, and 38.6 percent throughout the previous three seasons were significantly higher than that 32.2 percent.
Madsen will join the Heat as their seventeenth player under contract. NBA teams are permitted to carry up to 21 players during the offseason and preseason (including up to three players on two-way contracts), while the regular-season cap is 18 players (15 on standard contracts and three on two-way contracts). Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Norman Powell, Davion Mitchell, Simone Fontecchio, Haywood Highsmith, Nikola Jovic, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Pelle Larsson, and Keshad Johnson are among the 14 players the Heat have signed to standard contracts for the upcoming campaign.
Moving forward The two-way contracts that Myron Gardner and center Vlad Goldin have signed allow them to participate in up to 50 games throughout a season. Gardner and Goldin are the two players with two-way contracts. Guard Dru Smith, who has a qualifying offer from Miami to return on such a contract, may be the recipient of the Heat’s third and final two-way contract berth.
