DONE DEAL: Lions Sign ‘Massive’ 6-Foot-7 Lineman to Replace Injured Veteran

The Detroit Lions have enlisted significant assistance after losing a key backup lineman.

The organization announced that lineman Jamarco Jones was placed on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury during practice before to the season opener. Jones had knocked out Dan Skipper for the No. 3 tackle spot, but he was injured before the season began and will not return this year.

The Lions have already found a substitute by signing a 6-foot-7 lineman on Tuesday.

Lions are forced to make changes on their offensive line.

Lions Sign 'Massive' 6-Foot-7 Lineman to Replace Injured Veteran

Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged to media on Tuesday that Jones would not be able to return this season, throwing a significant blow to the team’s depth.

The Lions replaced him with former Cincinnati Bengals lineman Devin Cochran, who had been released prior to the start of the season.

Bengals reporter John Sheeran told AtoZ Sports that Cochran showed promise in nine appearances last season, including one start. While he will not contend for a starting spot on one of the league’s greatest offensive lines in Detroit, Sheeran said Cochran will provide reliable depth.

“He’s not going to be a reliable starter, but as an emergency option off the bench, you could find worse as a midseason addition,” he told me.

Reporter Jeremy Reisman of SB Nation’s Pride of Detroit suggested that the “massive” Cochran would be a viable backup choice if needed.

“[Cochran] was finally called up from the practice squad [last season] and made nine game appearances for the Bengals, including one start at left tackle,” according to Reisman. “He also played 83 snaps at right tackle as a mid-game fill-in across three games. After 100 pass blocking snaps, PFF assessed him with eight pressures allowed, one sack, and a 50.8 pass blocking grade. According to PFF, he performed somewhat better in 52 run blocking snaps, earning a 57.5 grade.

Skipper is also on the Lions’ practice squad, with three possible elevations this year if necessary.

The Lions struggled on offense in their Week 1 loss.
After finishing 15-2 and earning the top overall seed in the NFC last season, the Lions got off to a shaky start in 2025 with a crushing loss to their rival Green Bay Packers. The Lions managed only six points in five red-zone possessions before finally scoring in garbage time with a touchdown pass from Jared Goff to rookie Isaac TeSlaa.

Campbell said new offensive coordinator John Morton did an excellent job designing the game, but the team needs to improve its rushing game to win.
