Spotrac provided a contract update for San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease ahead of free agency, with him set to earn $155 million over six years.
The contract has an average salary of $26 million and ranks 10th in market value among starting pitchers, according to Spotrac’s forecasts.Cease is currently under contract with the Padres for one year and $13.75 million. Starting pitcher Michael King will also be available for free agency this winter. San Diego will most certainly be unable to re-sign both, with Cease projected to be the odd man out.
Cease’s upcoming free agency.
Cease has had a bad season in San Diego, going 7-11 with a 4.71 ERA in 29 appearances. However, the 29-year-old righty has shown glimpses of greatness throughout his seven-year career, including a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals on July 25, 2024.
Cease’s most appealing quality is certainly his durability—he has made at least 30 starts in each of the previous four seasons and is expected to do so again this year. This is in stark contrast to King, who has higher numbers yet continuously battles to stay healthy.
Spotrac compares Cease’s market value to contracts inked in recent years by these stars: Arizona’s Corbin Burnes (six-year, $210 million), the Yankees’ Max Fried (eight-year, $218 million), Boston’s Garrett Crochet (six-year, $170 million), and the Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow. (five-year, $136M).
