According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Miami Heat extended the contract of one of their most promising young players, Nikola Jovic, this week. The transfer occurs as the Heat begin training camp and prepare for the 2025-26 regular season.
Nikola Jovic signed a contract deal with the Heat worth $62.4 million over four years. Jovic was entering the final year of his rookie scale contract after the Heat exercised his team option prior to last season. If they did not reach a deal on a contract extension, Jovic would have entered unrestricted free agency this offseason.
Jovic, the No. 27 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, has seen his playing time and role rise over the past several seasons. Jovic set career highs last year, his third in the NBA. He’s anticipated to play a significant role for the Heat this season.
Jovic featured in 46 games for the Heat this year, including 10 starts, and averaged little more than 25 minutes per game. He averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from three, and 82.8 percent from the free throw line.
During the Heat’s first-round playoff loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jovic averaged 9.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 37.1 percent from the field, 25 percent from three-point range, and 100 percent from the free-throw line.
Jovic should be the team’s primary frontcourt reserve next season, assuming Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware start at center and power forward. Jovic’s ability to span the floor with his three-point shooting is one of the reasons he is vital to the squad.
