SAD NEWS: Mother of Texans Player Trapped in ‘Heartbreaking Immigration Nightmare’

The mother of Houston Texans linebacker Neville Hewitt, Deon Jones, 47, believed she would have the chance to try to reverse a previous drug conviction that resulted in her deportation when she boarded a plane last weekend. Hewitt considers the Texans’ elimination by the Baltimore Ravens last Saturday to be an afterthought because of what has transpired subsequently, which has been a nightmare for the family.

Texans linebacker Neville Hewitt earns starting nod with 'pure toughness'

Benjamin Osorio, Jones’ immigration attorney, was able to secure for her a fresh status hearing in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in Atlanta. After talking with an ICE officer, Osorio was under the impression that Jones would “probably be placed on house arrest with an ankle monitor” when she got to Atlanta. ICE, on the other hand, handled her like a high-security prisoner once her plane landed in Atlanta, ordering everyone inside to stay seated while she was removed from the airplane and placed not just in handcuffs but also with a waist chain. Her attorney’s contention is not that the 2008 incident never happened, but rather that it shouldn’t have resulted in her deportation based on federal law. And Jones was going to get her day in court to decide the course of events when she was transported back to America, where she had lived for the most of her life. Rather, she is being held at the Lumpkin, Georgia, Stewart Detention Centre and is in a state of immigration uncertainty. Osorio stated to The Daily Beast that “where she’s at is worse than prison.” When you are in immigration detention, all you do is eat and sleep. You’re limited in what you can do. You’re just sitting there, thinking to yourself.
