The Baltimore Ravens’ season ended in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, for Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, the end can only be the beginning of his NFL coaching career.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Macdonald will meet with Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris, Adam Peters, and high-ranking staff on Monday. The Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks are the only NFL teams without a head coach.
With Macdonald meeting with both the owner and the general manager, it appears that Washington has a serious interest in the defensive coordinator. The Commanders conducted a worldwide search for Ron Rivera’s replacement. While nothing is certain, Macdonald is on the top of Washington’s DC wish list.
This makes logical given how severely the Commanders struggled defensively. The trades of Montez Sweat and Chase Young limited their options. Nonetheless, Washington completed the season dead last in total defence, surrendering 388.9 yards per game.
The Ravens, on the other hand, were sixth in the NFL, allowing 301.4 YPG. While their offence could not compete, they limited the Chiefs to 17 points and 319 yards of total offence in the AFC Championship Game.
When the Commanders signed Adam Peters, Washington became serious about rebuilding the franchise. The next stage is to locate the ideal head coach to pair Peters with. Mike Macdonald may not be in the ideal position after watching his Ravens tumble. However, as Commanders’ captain, Macdonald’s defensive prowess may be just what Washington requires.
