The reigning World Series MVP may have a late start next season.
Texas Rangers general manager Chris Young confirmed to media on Tuesday that star shortstop Corey Seager had surgery for a sports hernia. While the Rangers are hoping that Seager will be ready for Opening Day, Young cautions that the issue occurred during the postseason and did not improve with rest.
Seager, a four-time All-Star, showed no signs of the injury during Texas’ World Series victory. He hit three home runs in five games against the Arizona Diamondbacks, including a game-tying shot in the eighth inning of Game 1. Seager received his second World Series MVP award (he previously won it with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020).
Nonetheless, the Rangers must be aggressive with Seager, who will be 30 in April and is a prohibitively expensive investment (on the third year of a 10-year, $325 million contract). Texas will already be without Max Scherzer to begin the 2024 season, and now Seager faces a difficult battle with his own injury comeback.
