According to reports, one former Boston Red Sox player is trying out for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the 2023 season, Boston gambled on veteran fireballer Dinelson Lamet, but he did not fare well. In his one major league appearance, he pitched just two innings and gave up three earned runs.
With the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, he recorded a 3.72 ERA with a 16-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio, demonstrating greater proficiency in the minor leagues. Before being released and joining Boston, Lamet was with the Colorado Rockies for the first part of the season, when he had 16 appearances with an 11.57 ERA.
The Red Sox designated Lamet for assignment, but he chose to remain a free agent. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, he has now apparently signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers, which includes an invitation to spring training.
“Dinelson Lamet to the Dodgers,” Heyman declared. “Minors deal with Major League Baseball’s spring invite.”
Lamet is a fascinating choice due to his near-100-mph fastball and his outstanding 2020 season with the San Diego Padres. In 12 starts, the big righty recorded a 2.09 ERA with a 93-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
After a very productive summer, Los Angeles now boasts even more depth and big-league potential. It is unknown what his function will be in the minor leagues, where he is expected to spend the most of his time.
Throughout his six-year big league career, Lamet has seen time as a starter and a reliever. Hopefully, he can return to his former glory in Los Angeles and make an impression in whatever capacity it assigns him.
