The Boston Celtics appear to have decided on Malcolm Brogdon.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the Celtics are not interested in trading Brogdon (at least not any more than they are interested in trading any other player on their roster). However, Himmelsbach admits that something about the Brogdon-Celtics situation “just feels slightly off.”
Earlier this week, we learned that veteran guard Brogdon was upset with the Celtics. The organization agreed to sell Brogdon to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team transaction in June, but the deal fell through due to a major health problem with Brogdon. That is most certainly the source of the guard’s dissatisfaction with Boston.
However, there is a solid case to be made right now for the Celtics to keep Brogdon on the roster and simply try to mend their relationship with him. After the Brogdon-to-Clippers trade fell through, the Celtics ended up sending Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies in a different trade (creating more minutes and touches in the backcourt).
Brogdon, who has two years left on his contract, won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award last season with an incredible 15-4-4 line off the bench (before suffering a right forearm injury that limited his ability to produce in the playoffs).
If the Celtics are unable to reach an agreement with Brogdon, it appears that they will have an interesting Plan B at point guard. With training camp approaching, Boston appears to prefer to run it back with Brogdon instead.
