For the majority of the previous week, there has been a lot of conjecture that the Washington Commanders will do all in their power to trade Caleb Williams. That reasoning is flawed since the Commanders have no negotiating power in a possible trade with the Chicago Bears.
Despite all the hope-selling that Commanders’ supporters have engaged in, the team will never be able to pressure the Bears into giving up the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Williams has no intention of turning down a contract to play for the Bears; thus, Chicago has little incentive to work out a deal with the Commanders given the lack of value in dropping a slot.
Consequently, the discussion will stop if the Bears conclude their assessment and decide that Williams is not only the finest quarterback available in the draft but also the best choice for their squad. In a recent mailbag, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune noted that if Williams meets all the requirements, the Bears will select him.
“I don’t see how the Bears could consider a trade with the Commanders if Williams is the best quarterback once they finish their evaluation process and establish their roster. How could a team that has spent decades looking for a franchise quarterback miss up on the opportunity to select its number-one pick in the quarterback class? They have the number one pick; it’s illogical to believe there is a better path, and it’s impossible to predict where they will draft or the makeup of the quarterback class the next year.”

All of the irrational conspiracy theories will ultimately turn out to be pointless mental exercises. In the end, Justin Fields hasn’t demonstrated enough over the course of his first three seasons to justify his potential as the starting quarterback. Fields’s inconsistent play is much to blame for the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position. If Williams’ evaluations are in line with expectations, the Bears won’t pass up the chance to get better at the position, despite that question.
